Best Campgrounds Near Tomball for RV Rentals

If you're renting an RV from us in Tomball, here's where to actually take it. We get this question constantly — “where can we go for a long weekend without driving 6 hours?” — so we put together a real list of campgrounds within easy reach. All of these accept RVs of our camper's size and have hookups available.

1. Sam Houston National Forest — Stubblefield Lake Recreation Area

Distance: ~50 miles north of Tomball (1 hour drive). Hookups: Limited — primarily primitive sites. Best for: Quiet weekends, hiking, and fishing on the West Fork San Jacinto River.

Stubblefield is the closest national forest campground to Tomball with RV-friendly access. Sites are first-come-first-serve, so arrive Friday by mid-afternoon if you're going on a weekend. Our RV camper's on-board generator add-on ($75/night with 5 gal of gas) makes this site workable even without electric hookups.

2. Lake Conroe — Lake Conroe Park & Several Private RV Resorts

Distance: ~35 miles north (45 min drive). Hookups: Full hookups available at most private parks. Best for: Family camping with boat access.

Lake Conroe is the most popular RV destination near Houston. Lake Conroe Park, Stow-A-Way Marina & RV Park, and Lake Conroe Hideaway all accept RV rentals — call ahead because some Texas RV parks restrict rentals from third-party owners (we have documentation that helps if asked). Family-friendly, lots of fishing.

3. Brazos Bend State Park

Distance: ~70 miles south (1.25 hour drive). Hookups: 50-amp electric and water at developed sites. Best for: Wildlife (yes, alligators), stargazing at the George Observatory.

Brazos Bend has some of the cleanest, most well-maintained RV sites in southeast Texas. Reservations open 5 months in advance and book up fast for weekends. If you're in our RV camper, you'll want a 30-amp adapter (we include one).

4. Galveston Island State Park

Distance: ~75 miles southeast (1.5 hour drive). Hookups: Water and 30/50-amp electric. Best for: Beach camping with the family.

Pricier than inland sites but you wake up to the Gulf. Bayside sites are quieter; beachside sites are louder but get the breeze and views. We've had renters do a long weekend here multiple times.

5. Huntsville State Park

Distance: ~65 miles north (1.25 hour drive). Hookups: Full hookups at developed sites. Best for: First-time RV campers — easy setup, well-marked sites, on-site lake.

If this is your first RV rental, Huntsville is the easiest place to start. Sites are level, hookups are clearly labeled, and the staff is patient with newcomers. We send first-timers here a lot.
